Steve Brown has been an English language arts educator for over 25 years. He received his BA in English from Southern Utah University in 1999 and began teaching on the Navajo Nation that same year. Before coming to WRA, he taught middle school for many years and also served as a school improvement coordinator and outside consultant.
In those last two positions, he assisted two different districts with developing comprehensive writing programs that included instruction, assessment, and staff development.
His basic philosophy is that most students are interested in anything they are good at and avoid anything they are unsure about. Increase their skill level, and you will increase their engagement. This requires pushing students slightly beyond their comfort zones while simultaneously managing their stress levels until they know “I’ve got this.” As they gain confidence, they move toward becoming independent learners.
Outside of teaching, Steve is a husband, father of four adult boys, a writer, and a gardener.
